Retail & E-commerce Downtime Cost Calculator

Retail is one of the few industries where downtime subtracts revenue in real time. If the point-of-sale system is down, customers walk out. If the online store is unreachable, shoppers buy elsewhere — and unlike a delayed legal filing, those transactions rarely come back later. Payment processing, inventory lookups, and order management all sit in the failure path.

E-commerce sharpens the exposure further: the storefront is the IT system, so availability and revenue are the same thing. Outages during peak windows — evenings, weekends, promotions, holiday season — cost disproportionately more than the average hour, and cart abandonment from a slow or failing checkout is invisible in most incident reports. This calculator applies a 1.4 revenue multiplier for retail and e-commerce to reflect how directly sales depend on systems being up.

The output remains conservative by design: it averages revenue across working hours rather than modeling peak-hour spikes, and every assumption is published on the methodology page. If your sales concentrate heavily in specific windows, treat the result as a lower bound.

Retail & E-commerce downtime — common questions

Why is the retail & e-commerce multiplier 1.4?

Because downtime converts directly into lost transactions — walked-out customers and abandoned carts — rather than deferred work. The 1.4 multiplier reflects that direct revenue dependence while still averaging conservatively across hours.

Our sales spike at specific hours. Does the calculator account for that?

No — it averages annual revenue across 2,080 working hours, which understates the cost of an outage during a peak window. If your revenue concentrates in evenings, weekends, or seasonal peaks, your true hourly exposure during those windows is higher than the estimate.

Does this include chargebacks or reputation damage?

No. The model covers idled staff and interrupted revenue only. Refunds, chargebacks, ad spend wasted on an unreachable site, and long-term customer loss are real but excluded — the estimate is intentionally a floor.
